UPSC conducted civil service prelims on 26th May 2013. There are two papers each of 200 marks. Paper 1 consists of 100 questions and paper 2 of 80 questions.

CIVIL SERVICE 2013 PRELIMS SYLLABUS


SYLLABI FOR THE EXAMINATION 
PART-A 
PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION 
The Examination shall comprise two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. 
Paper I - (200 marks) Duration : Two hours 

  •  Current events of national and international importance. 
  •  History of India and Indian National Movement. 
  •  Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World. 
  •  Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc. 
  • Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc. 
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization. 
  • General Science

Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours 

  •  Comprehension 
  •  Interpersonal skills including communication skills; 
  •  Logical reasoning and analytical ability 
  •  Decision-making and problem-solving 
  •  General mental ability 
  •  Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level),  Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level) 
  •  English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).


Note 1 : Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus 
of Paper II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation 
thereof in the question paper. 
Note 2 : The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type

Kerala Govt increases Engineering Courses fee by 25%
Kerala Government increases Engineering courses like Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and, Master of Technology (M.Tech) courses fee structure for the year 2013-14 in all government and aided engineering colleges in the state increase by 20 to 25%.
As per sources, the revision in the fee structure has resulted following a recommendation by the director of technical education for an increase in fees charged for various courses conducted in government and aided engineering colleges and fine arts colleges under the department. As per the government order, the fee structure for M.Tech (regular) has been hike from Rs 12,000/- per year to Rs 15,725. The fee structure for M.Tech (evening) has been hike from Rs 12,000 per year to Rs 15,725 from this academic year. There is also a hike in B.Tech fees. While the fee for B.Tech (regular) has been hike from Rs 5,565 per year to Rs 8,225 this academic year, the fee for B.Tech (evening) has been hike from Rs 12,000 per year to Rs 18,000 this academic year. The hike in fee will be applicable to nine government colleges and three private aided colleges. A total of 153 engineering colleges in the state with a total sanctioned intake of 48,988 seats of which 141 are self-financing colleges. The sanctioned intake of government colleges during 2012 was 3,236 (6.6%) seats, and aided colleges are 1,566 (3.2%) seats. Though there is a hike of 20 to 25 % in fees, which includes admission fee, tuition fee and special fee, it is much lower than the fees paid by students in private engineering colleges. While a student admitting under government quota in a private engineering college has to pay Rs 65,000 per year, those who seek admission under the management quota have to pay anything between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.24 lakh a year. Also, fees for Fine arts courses have also been hiked.

Increased Fee Structure:
M.Tech (Regular): Rs 12,000/- to Rs 15,725/-
M.Tech (Evening): Rs 31,330/- to Rs 46,950/-
B.Tech (Regular): Rs 5,565/- to Rs 8,225/-
B.Tech (Evening): Rs 12,000/- to Rs 18,000/-
BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts): Rs 1,910/- to Rs 2,675/-
MFA (Master of Fine Arts): Rs 7,300/- to Rs 7,850/-
